How to Create a wooden sphere from piece of sweet gum tree

Mar 24, 2010 08:08 PM
Woodturning process with a craftsman shaping a log on a lathe.

This video outlines the process used to turn a chunk of wood, specifically sweet gum, otherwise known as Liquidambar styraciflua, American sweetgum, redgum, liquidambar, or simply liquid amber.

Turning this chunk of liquid amber wood into a large sphere (350mm) is time consuming, and you need good tools, like a wood lathe (the one in the video is a Vicmarc VL300).

You don't need a template to create this large wooden sphere. Just the right tools, so watch and start turning your own wooden globe.

The next big software update for iPhone is coming sometime in April and will include a Food section in Apple News+, an easy-to-miss new Ambient Music app, Priority Notifications thanks to Apple Intelligence, and updates to apps like Mail, Photos, Podcasts, and Safari. See what else is coming to your iPhone with the iOS 18.4 update.
